We found an old iron crab trap back on Long Island when i was a kid. We'd tie a few hot dogs inside,drop it in the water off the pier,pull it up in an hr or so, and ride our bikes home and cook them. Good times.

Catching blue crabs with a blue chicken drumstick is genius!!!

Use chicken necks or backs less expensive bait. Some of the best bait I've used with chicken feet if you can find them.

Used to go fishing for crawfish with my dad, he just tied a piece of meat with a string, tied it to a steak, had a dozen of them on a river bank and kept checking them, we usually went in the evening.

When i was a kid we would just break open mussels we found on the shore and lower them with clothespins attached to string. It worked just as well and the crabs actually held on to the meat as you were dragging them up. I just figured they were too angry to let go. fun times.

My dad used cheap rancid chicken backs...and multiple lines along the shoreline tied to a stick stuck in the mud. As you see any line move, you know you have one, or five. It's like BINGO in that it's up to you how many lines you can handle at the same time. We wanted to hurry up and get out of that marsh asap, so it was at least 5 lines per person, per net. Childhood memories!

Unless you were planning to keep and cook it, that was probably the best outcome. Fish survival rate drops 35% if you take them out of the water for extended times like for pictures and/or to weigh them.
